Chamber Music Academy

Internationales Musikfestival Heidelberger Frühling, Germany After the positive response to its premiere the Festival Academy also remains true to its concept in its second year: grant recipients and lecturers from throughout the world will find scope here at the Heidelberger Frühling festival to explore artistic content without any time pressure or focus on results. Under the artistic guidance of Thomas Hampson the Lied Academy focuses not just on pure musical work but, more specifically, on the word in relation to the sound. Conveying the historical and ideological contexts in which Lieder were written plays a role here as does an exploration of the symbolic context of the lyrics. This year’s focus is on the phenomenon of the Lieder cycle. At the Chamber Music Academy supported this year by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation international grant recipients will – in public rehearsals with lecturers Sharon Kam, Ewa Kupiec and the Quatuor Danel – elaborate programs where works of the classical and romantic repertoire are juxtaposed with more recent works. The results will be presented by academy participants in short lunchtime and after-work concerts and in large evening concerts together with the lecturers. This year sees a special focus on compositions by the long-term friend of the Frühling Festival Wolfgang Rihm who will be celebrating his 60th birthday in 2012. The final concert of the Chamber Music Academy will also be a celebration in honor of the composer.
