Conducting Composers – Composing Conductors

Stiftung Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Germany

The Conducting Composers – Composing Conductors project will be held as part of the international Easter academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. This is the third part in a three-year series made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation whose key motivation are pedagogical aspects in conjunction with conveying New Music both to young musicians and to the audience. The core idea here is to link the creative, mediating, performing and receiving aspects of musical experience. As part of the three-year series composers also working as internationally renowned conductors elaborate, together with Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, their own compositions commissioned by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. These are then juxtaposed with central works of the classical concert repertoire. Previous participants include Peter Ruzicka and in summer 2012 Matthias Pintscher. For the 2013 Festival German composer and conductor Jörg Widmann will compose a work for the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra. As conductor Jörg Widmann will head the rehearsals with the young orchestra musicians thereby conveying to them his own work and familiarizing them with contemporary music. As part of the concert program Jörg Widmann is to be presented not only as a composer and conductor but also as a clarinetist. Rehearsals will be held at the festival orchestra’s new rehearsal space, the ACO Thormannhalle in Rendsburg/Büdelsdorf, and will be accessible for the interested public, aspiring composers and conductors. The results of this work will be presented as part of the main program of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in a facilitated workshop concert in Rendsburg/Büdelsdorf as well as, presumably, in Hamburg. A performance of the festival orchestra is also planned in Berlin under the baton of Jörg Widmann at the “Young Euro Classic” Festival.
