Tenso Young Composers Workshop - the choir as instrument

Tenso Network Europe, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Tenso is the European network of professional chamber choirs, founded in 2003. Tenso organizes festivals, workshops for young performers and composers and the exchange of knowledge and expertise about contemporary choral music and its performances.
The development of new choral repertoire is one of Tenso’s primary missions. The Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung supports two workshops that will be organized by Tenso in 2012. They will be under the direction of composer/conductor James Wood (UK), conductor Kaspars Putnins (LV) and Tenso artistic consultant Leo Samama (NL), and with the participation of the renowned Latvijas Radio Koris. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate young composers to write more and better music for chamber choir.
Six composers are coached in the Tenso Young Composers Workshop, subtitled ‘the choir as instrument’. Two rounds of workshops in Stockholm and Mechelen give the selected composers the chance to work intensively on their scores. The workshop results in an award, a commission for a new work for chamber choir, to be performed by the Tenso member choirs in their regular season.
