Fliegender Teppich – Zeitgenössische Oper für Kinder

Opus21musikplus, Munich, Germany

“Fliegender Teppich” (Flying Carpet), a contemporary opera for children, is the continuation and highpoint of the opus21plus live primary school education program. Here the author E. Torossi will write the Odyssey in fairy tale form. Primary school children will then write their own poems on this topic with mentoring from the author herself. Three composers – Amos Elkana from Israel, Sinem Altan from Turkey and Giorgios Koumendakis from Greece – will then set the poems to music and feature these songs in the three operas they will develop here for ensemble, soloists and children’s choir on the topic of the Odyssey. The three operas will be premiered together in Munich on one evening in 2013 and will then be performed at various festivals in Germany and the composers’ countries of origin. This contemporary “Fliegender Teppich” opera for children is to be established as an institution in Munich thereby offering other international composers the opportunity to compose opera as a musical expression of our day for both children and adults.
