Composition Commission issued to Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf

ELISION ensemble, Melbourne, Australia

The Elision Ensemble commissioned a new composition with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. The composition of Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf is of 15 minutes duration and written for oboe, two clarinets, trumpet, trombone, electric guitar, and percussion. It explores notions of extreme rhythmic and timbral complexity at the structural level and at the level of generating quite particular and new performance techniques. The Australian Elision Ensemble is very experienced with this kind of complexity in new music and conceives the work with Mahnkopf as an opportunity to galvanise the energies of the ensemble. The world premiere of Mahnkopf’s new piece will be performed by the Elision Ensemble at the Transit Festival in Leuven, Belgium.

World Premiere: October 2013
