Composition commission for music theatre issued to Johannes Seidl, Gerhard Stäbler and Francois Sarhon for TonLagen Hellerau

HELLERAU - Europäisches Zentrum der Künste, Dresden, Germany

Working closely together since 2008 Daniel Kötter and Hannes Seidl are to stage a complex interplay of documentary films and live concerts entitled Fernorchester. Fernorchester is a piece about distance, in the spatial, temporal, physical and structuring sense of the word. The stage is split into two; on the right hand side of the stage an ensemble of six musicians sits in a conventional concert arrangement while on the left-hand side you see the same musicians individually on video screens featured at a different location: this being the Fernorchester (literally Distance Orchestra). In this constellation an artistic process simultaneously develops, forming both a film and a concert.
The project is part of Dresden’s annual contemporary music event “Festival zeitgenössischer Musik” that was founded in 1997 as the “Dresdner Tage der zeitgenössischen Musik” and which, since 2009, has primarily used Hellerau’s tradition-rich festival hall under the name of “TonLagen”. The organizer is HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste Dresden.
