Composition commissions issued to Friedrich Schenker, Anton Safronov and Kristian Kesten

XX. Randfestspiele, Evangelische Kirche Zepernick, Germany

Held for the first time in 1993 the Randfestspiele festival developed out of the church music activities of Zepernick’s protestant church Evangelische Kirche Zepernick. Right from the start particular focus was placed on creating close links between the audience, musicians and the composers living here so as to counter a certain degree of anonymity in the music. What was originally aimed more at a local audience and regional musicians has increasingly widened due to the growing interest the festival has generated and its growing number of fans. Indeed, over the past 20 years it has become an international festival without losing its down-to-earth approach and its links to the region. In its anniversary year the RANDFESTSPIELE will place the “Rand” or fringe back into focus as its real motto. In addition to this the 70th birthday of the composer Friedrich Schenker is also to form a focal point at the heart of the festival. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is funding the composition commission “20 Miniopern” (20 Mini Operas) by Friedrich Schenk along with other commissions issued to Anton Safronov and Kristian Kesten.
