Composition Commissions issued to Miroslav Srnka and Salvatore Sciarrino

Munich Chamber Orchestra

Over the past few years the Munich Chamber Orchestra (MKO) has issued numerous commissions to composers which have been performed not only at premieres in Munich but also at the MKO’s guest performances at many European music centers and festivals where they frequently met with an excellent response. Over the past four years composers like Georg Friedrich Haas, Márton Illés, Mark Andre, Klaus Lang, Bernhard Lang, Roland Moser, Thomas Larcher, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Nikolaus Brass and Alfred Zimmerlin have written works for the MKO exploring the tonal facets of stringed music in a very varied manner.

For the 2011/12 season with the motto “Ostwärts” (Eastwards) the MKO issued a composition commission to the young Czech composer Miroslav Srnka with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

For the 2012/2013 season with the motto “Drama” the MKO was also able, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, to win over the great Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino for a composition commission. Born in Palermo in 1947 Sciarrino’s works were once described by Max Nyffeler as “full of stories” told “in pictures, as a pure tonal drama with truly inexhaustible imagination”. He is now working on a stringed orchestral work for the MKO developed in cooperation with the Bonn Beethoven Festival to be premiered in Bonn in September 2012.

Srnka Premiere:
May 8th 2012
Prinzregententheater, Munich

Sciarrino Premiere:
