Die Kreuzung – Portrait Concerts Andre, Thomalla, Czernowin

Ensemble Dal Niente, Chicago, USA

In 2012, Ensemble Dal Niente will present a three-part series of portrait concerts featuring composers who have recently made significant impact in German contemporary music. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the composers Mark André, Hans Thomalla, and Chaya Czernowin will be invited to collaborate with the Chicago-based Ensemble Dal Niente in several ways: the curation of a program which features their music, in-person rehearsals and preparation, and a public dialogue and performance. The first concert “Proximity” will include North American premieres of Mark Andrés ensemble works “zum staub” and “durch”, and solo piano piece “Contrapunctus”. The second concert “Absence” will present the North American premiere of Hans Thomalla’s “The Brightest Form of Absence”. The piece is a 40-minute multimedia work for voice, ensemble, live electronics, and video projection, created by Thomalla and video-artist William Lamson, based on research in desert locations. The third concert “Intersection” will feature works of Israeli-born composer Chaya Czernowin, among them “Sahaf” for saxophone, piano, guitar, and percussion, as well as “Afatism” for large ensemble and her trio “Die Kreuzung”.
