Salzburg Biennale 2013

Salzburg, Austria

Musical composition means taking a stance towards earlier music in the form of either approximation or delimitation. Every new composition is impacted by what has been written before it – yet influences of this kind can either be made audible or erased. Forming a central theme in the program of the three-week Salzburg Biennale 2013 are the altering perspectives of contemporary composers towards tradition and their own earlier works. Terms like palimpsest, over-writing and re-composition are but approximate terms to describe the complex approaches arising from extremely different standpoints towards already existent music. Featuring within this context are performances like Zender’s “33 Veränderungen über 33 Veränderungen” (ÖEA), Lachenmann’s “Accanto” (ÖEA), the premiere of  Rebecca Saunders’ “Chroma XVII” to which a composer portrait is dedicated, the premiere of Beat Furrer’s “Xenos III” and Wolfgang Mitterer’s “missing link”. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is lending its support to the 3rd Salzburg Biennale 2013.
