Wien Modern 2012: Focus on Olga Neuwirth

2012 sees the Vienna Modern festival enter its 25th year. Since its founding in 1988 the festival moves within the force field of musical innovation and tradition. Vienna Modern was designed as an international platform for current musical developments that is intended to make central works of present-day music accessible on a large scale. Following this central idea Vienna Modern has concentrated from the outset on the presentation of key figures of composition of the 20th and 21st centuries. Some 40 composers of different generations, cultural backgrounds and aesthetic focuses were invited to Vienna over these years and were presented in portrait concerts, workshops and lecture recitals.
The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the Vienna Modern festival in 2012 – which this year highlights, amongst others, an artist who is not only one of the most highly sought after composers internationally but also one found like scarcely no other at the interface with other genres and topics – Olga Neuwirth. She is among those cross-media composers who already experimented in their works with such media as video and electronics and who thus boasts differentiated know-how in various areas, whether it is in fine art, film, the neurosciences, philosophy or literature. With her work Olga Neuwirth embarks over and over on a voyage of discovery – be it in the field of history, in the vacuum of time or even in the border zone of social togetherness.
