Europäische Musikgeschichte (European Music History)

Ulrich Mosch and Tobias Bleek (Authors and Editors), Kassel, Germany

Unlike in art history the German-speaking area can only boast but a few publications on music history which target a broad readership. To fill the gap in this market the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is now funding the volume “Europäische Musikgeschichte” (working title) edited by Tobias Bleek and Ulrich Mosch to be published in the second half of 2013 by Bärenreiter-Verlag. Based on the very latest in scholarly research the publication is to convey a basic grounding in European musical history from ancient times through to the present day in a clear and comprehensible style.
At the focus of the volume is the history of western art music. The basis for this will be provided by a media-historic approach that sees the particular historicality of music within the context of two landmarks: the development of the musical notation system and the invention of sound reproduction at the end of the 19th century.
