Indexation of the Musical Works of Bernd Alois Zimmermann and their Sources

Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Germany

Today Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918–1970) is recognized as one of the most striking personalities in composition of the 2nd half of the 20th century. Hailing from a rather traditional background Zimmermann set about intensively exploring each new musical development – from post-war Classicism and music of the Schönberg school through to serial and random aleatoric procedures – and was able to develop the work produced over the last two decades of his life into a very personal synthesis. This synthesis preceded both the aspects of the musical Post Modern era and crossover tendencies between the different art forms – developments that only became more widespread after his death.
The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the publication indexing Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s musical works and their sources. For the first time now the publication offers an index elaborated according to historically critical methods and will feature all Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s compositions including his largely unpublished early works, his numerous contributions to functional music (e.g. radio drama music) and arrangements. All 369 works entries boast exhaustive source documentation and evaluation.
