Composers' Academy – Year 3

Philharmonia Orchestra, London, United Kingdom

The Philharmonia Orchestra's Composers' Academy is a season-long training experience for three outstanding composers at the start of their careers. Mentored by Unsuk Chin, the renowned composer and Artistic Director of the contemporary series “Music of Today”, each year the Academy will culminate in a public performance of the composers' new works that have been workshopped during the Academy.

The new cohort of three composers will be selected by the Royal Philharmonic Society by June 2018, in time for the start of Composers' Academy Year 3 in September 2018. Each composer will be commissioned to write a 10-minute work to be performed in June 2019 at Royal Festival Hall as part of the Orchestra's flagship “Music of Today” contemporary music series. The performance is professionally recorded by NMC Recordings. The ensemble of up to twelve Philharmonia musicians gives the composers great scope for compositional creativity and ensures that the pieces are varied and contrasting. Instrumental masterclasses, workshops, mentoring, tutorials, music technology during the Academy and the two rehearsals in Royal Festival Hall and Henry Wood Hall provide a framework to enable the three composers to produce the very best new music they possibly can, performed to a public audience and recorded. Industry professionals attend the final concert, and a post-concert reception will aid further networking.
