Composition Commission issued to Aribert Reimann: L'INVISIBLE

Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany

As Germany’s second largest opera house Deutsche Oper Berlin is setting itself the challenge of maintaining and extending the contemporary repertoire of musical theater. Since the 2015/16 season one new piece of work has been premiered every year in the main building, Großes Haus. Care was taken when selecting the composers to combine different generations and signature styles. For 2017 the composer chosen was Aribert Reimann whose artistic work has been closely connected to Deutsche Oper Berlin for over 50 years now.

In his opera triptych L'Invisible supported by the EvS Music Foundation Reimann links three of Maurice Maeterlinck’s one-act performances. The three works Der Eindringling (1890), Interieur (1894) and Der Tod des Tintagiles (1894) focus on the confrontation with death within the closest family circle. In the tradition of the literary opera the composer takes the (translated) texts and transforms them into an evening’s opera lasting just under two hours.
