Composition Commission issued to Germán Toro Pérez

Vokalensemble Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland

Germán Toro Pérez, a composer with Columbian roots, lives in Vienna and Zürich and teaches at Zurich’s art academy Züricher Hochschule der Künstle (ZHdK). For several years now he has been focusing on the Mexican author Juan Rulfo and his only novel Pedro Páramo that is so central to Latin American literature in its topicality and unusual form. This novel forms the point of departure for his composition commission Viaje a Comala / Reise nach Comala (Journey to Comala) for Vokalensemble Zürich that is being supported by the EvS Music Foundation. Viaje a Comala is a conversation with the dead that focalizes repression, illusion and freedom.

The production will be developed by the composer in close collaboration with the ZHdK. It will make possible promising initial cooperations, such as with Ensemble PHACE from Vienna or the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology Zürich.
