Composition Commission issued to Peter Ruzicka: 7th String Quartet

Minguet Quartet, Cologne, Germany

In the past the Minguet Quartet has been committed to the performance of Peter Ruzicka’s six string quartets at numerous performances both at home and abroad. The entire recording at NEOS was awarded the 2011 classical music prize Echo-Preis Klassik. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation the ensemble is now issuing a composition for a 7th string quartet to Peter Ruzicka especially written for the Minguet Quartet.

Commenting on his new string quartet...possible-à-chaque-instant Peter Ruzicka said: “The title refers to a notion of Paul Valéry concerning the artistic creative process that has preoccupied me for a long time now: ‘It would perhaps be interesting to once create a piece of work that, at each of its nodes, showed to the mind the variety from which it then chooses to select the unique sequence that would be given in the text. This would mean: instead of the illusion of a unique determination imitating reality you set one that is at-any-moment-possible.‘ To my mind, a reflective observation of this kind sets Beethoven’s String Quartet op. 131 free, a singular work that makes constant reference to a horizon of possibility. In my 7th string quartet I avoid clear continuities and often talk in potential terms of ‘Fragmente aus der Zukunft’ (Fragments from the Future). The work is aimed at a compositional self-experience that aims at compositional self-discovery not targeting the totality of the composition but mirroring its processuality.”

The premiere of ...possible-à-chaque-instant will be held on May 7, 2017 at the Elbphilharmonie hall. Further performances are planned for Fall 2017 at the New Music events Treffpunkt Neue Musik Wels in Austria and Klangwerkstatt Berlin – Festival für Neue Musik.
