Composition Commissions issued to Krebber, Sánchez-Verdú, Rykova and Nieder

Calefax, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Since its founding over three decades ago Calefax has sought to extend the repertoire for the unusual reed line-up of oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon. For the Morphing Relations project the quintet is working with the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. Supported by the EvS Music Foundation the four commissioned composers Steffen Krebber, José María Sánchez-Verdú, Elena Rykova and Fabio Nieder will be exploring transformations and relations in their composition. This can mean picking up in their work on already existing music or everyday sounds as well as rethinking the relationship between the composer and the work, the audience and history.

Steffen Krebber will be creating music from existing compositions from different eras. José María Sánchez-Verdú will repeatedly explore the relationship between contemporary and earlier music. A dedication to music history will often be detectable in contemporary music in Fabio Nieder’s work. Finally, the young composer Elena Rykova will select very new compositional approaches to focalize the exchange and the relationship between musicians.
