Kissinger LiederWerkstatt: Ten Composition Commissions

Stadt Bad Kissingen, Bad Kissingen, Germany

Every year the Kissinger Sommer festival issues composition commissions for piano lieder that are premiered at the festival’s lieder workshop Kissinger LiederWerkstatt. The aim here is to explore and revive the piano lied genre after its heyday in the 19th century. The LiederWerkstatt in 2017 marks the first time this workshop will be held in cooperation with another festival: the Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker.

The Kissinger Sommer will be commissioning one work each from Alexander Muno, Bernd Redmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Steffen Schleiermacher, Charlotte Seither, Manfred Trojahn and Erkki-Sven Tüür – and the new works will be premiered at the LiederWerkstatt. The Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker will be commissioning David Philip Hefti, Arnulf Herrmann and Rebecca Saunders with the composition of lieder or lied groups that will be premiered as part of the Hitzacker festival. All composition commissions are being funded by the EvS Music Foundation.

The motto at LiederWerkstatt 2017 is Aufstand (Uprising). Subjective expression as an externalization of the individual often had a revolutionary focus in the musical Romantic period of the 19th century. This revolutionary approach is also relevant in our current century: uprisings like the Arab Spring or the uprising at Maidan Square in Kiev have marked this still young 21st century.

In addition to the concerts introductory and in-depth events will be held in Bad Kissingen and Hitzacker.
