Ensemble Nikel – Future in the Rearview Mirror // Anniversary Season

Ensemble Nikel, Kiryat Tiv'on, Israel

Since 2007, the Tel Aviv based Ensemble Nikel has been focusing on closely familiarizing the Israeli audience with the work of world-leading composers that is often little present on the local music scene. Thanks to its aim of developing a new repertoire for the ensemble’s unique instrumentation (saxophone, e-guitar, percussion and piano), the ensemble has been able to present world premiere performances in Israel of pieces by composers like Pierluigi Billone, Chaya Czernowin, Jose Maria Sanchez Verdu, Philippe Hurel, Raphael Cendo, Clemens Gadenstätter and Stefan Prins.
Supported by the EvS Music Foundation, during the 2017 anniversary season, there will be world premieres of pieces by the established composers Enno Poppe (in collaboration with the Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik) and Philippe Hurel (in collaboration with the French Ministry of Culture). In partnership with the Goethe Institute and The Elma Arts Center, a major production will be presented to the Israeli audience: a spectacle by Alexander Schubert written for Nikel, a singer, light effects and live electronics. This production was a Nikel initiative and was premiered at Wien Modern 2015.
One major focus during the anniversary season lies on a composer who has not yet performed in Israel: Giorgio Netti. The planned event in collaboration with the Italian Institute is a double recital concert with a work for soprano saxophone by Girogio Netti to be followed by an e-guitar recital of the Sgorgo tryptych by Pierluigi Billone. As the ensemble has always focused on the presence and direct contact with the composers and artists, various among them are invited to join the events in Israel, to give lectures, master classes and exchange with the audience.
