Mark Andre: riss – First Complete Performance of the Triptychon

Ensemble Zeitsprung, Munich, Germany

Inspired by the essay Der Vorhang zerreißt (The Curtain Rips) by theologian Margareta Gruber in 2014 Mark Andre began composing the three-part work rissriss 2 was premiered in 2014 by the Ensemble Modern; this was followed in June 2016 by riss 3 performed by Ensemble Musikfabrik in Cologne. Finally, riss 1 will be launched in Paris in March 2017 by the Ensemble intercontemporain. Immediately afterwards Ensemble Zeitsprung will enact the first complete performance of the Triptychon in Munich. A further performance will be held as part of the 16th edition of the New Music festival Tage der Neuen Musik Bamberg.

For the musicians of Ensemble Zeitsprung this is not merely a concert project. The aim is an in-depth exploration of Mark Andre and his music. The uncompromising gravity in his work – when preparing the musical material and also when exploring existential issues of Christian belief – requires an equally in-depth approach by the musicians.

A detailed publication is planned as a kind of extended program – to document not only the work texts and interviews but also the preparation of the production and the artists’ exploration of the work. The EvS Music Foundation is supporting the performance of the Triptychon.
