MULTIVERSUM – Peter Eötvös

HamburgMusik – Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle Betriebsgesellschaft, Hamburg, Germany

Under the heading MULTIVERSUM  the Elbphilharmonie is holding a comprehensive portrait series of the contemporary universal musicians Matthias Pintscher, Peter Eötvös and George Benjamin who come into play as composers, conductors, curators, teachers and interlocutors, thereby conveying a multidimensional image of their creativity. Each artist impacts one Elbphilharmonie season. The programs, which are designed and largely conducted by the artists themselves, open up new perspectives in terms of music history by presenting a cross-section of their own work and relating this to works by other composers.

In the 2017/18 season the focus is on Peter Eötvös’ creative body of work and this is also where the title of the series comes from. Peter Eötvös himself will conduct each of the six planned concerts which include opera works, Stockhausen’s Donnerstag aus Licht and the premiere of MULTIVERSUM (composition commission from the Elbphilharmonie). Forming a focus of his residency, that is supported by the EvS Music Foundation, will be his comprehensive teaching work and support of young talents: masterclasses will also be held at Hamburg’s music and theater academy Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg as well as a concert featuring the academy’s orchestra.

The participating, world-ranking orchestras during the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons include the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Modern.
