71st Darmstädt Spring Conference "Clash! Generationen – Kulturen – Identitäten in Neuer Musik“ (“Clash! Generations – Cultures – Identities in New Music”)

Institut für Neue Musik und Musikerziehung INMM, Darmstadt

Today more than ever, awareness of cultural differences reveals the fragility of what is perceived as one’s ‘own’ cultural tradition. Fixed formats dissolve and clear delineations between genres blur. However, where these processes are reflected by the composers themselves it shows that the “clash” does not threaten art but receives central creative impulses through the often gruff encounter a cultural clash generates.

On the basis of these considerations at the INMM Spring Conference 2017, supported by the EvS Music Foundation, the “clash” dimension is not only to be limited to spatially separated cultures. Instead, this “clash” is also to be seen and focalized as a phenomenon that attacks the only apparently firmly structured identity of our own culture from within and because of this receives central creative impulses. Therefore, it will not only be about exploring the ‘other’, for instance non-European cultural elements, but also about the inner processing of experiences of alienation as well as generational conflicts.

One tradition of the INMM conferences is opening a dialog with prominent composers who have a special relationship to the conference theme. In a double portrait this year two composers of different generations and origin have been consciously chosen in the form of Heiner Goebbels and Ondrej Adámek. Alongside them the composers Sandeep Bhagwati, Sarah Nemtsov, Sergej Newski, Joanna Bailie, Johannes Kreidler and Bernhard König will also have a say with their works each expressing different facets of the “clash” phenomenon.
