Listening Lab – Materials for Musical Appreciation

Universal Edition AG, Vienna, Austria

Over the past few years the practical field of musical appreciation has seen dynamic growth – numerous orchestras and ensembles as well as concert houses are seeking ways to reach out to a broad audience with their performances. Specific concert formats are being developed and preparatory workshops are being held especially for schoolchildren so that the live experience in the concert hall can be as intense and relatable as possible. There are still only few auxiliary materials available for this kind of musical appreciation. And this is where the Universal Edition series comes in presenting stimulating and practice-oriented access points for children, young people and adults. In each case here it places one work of the modern age centerstage. Alongside offering concrete ideas for the implementation of workshops for different age groups and dramaturgical materials on the context of the works multimedia supplements support each volume. As a pilot series 2014 saw the publication of Alban Berg – Violinkonzert and György Ligeti – Atmospheres. After the first three volumes the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is now also supporting the publication of volumes on the works of Olivier Messiaen, Arvo Pärt and Gustav Mahler.

Volume 7: Messiaen (Oiseaux exotiques) planned release date: January 1, 2018

Volume 8: Pärt (NN) planned release date: July 1, 2018

Volume 9: Mahler (9th Symphony) planned release date: January 1, 2019
