MULTIVERSUM – George Benjamin

HamburgMusik gGmbH – Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle Betriebsgesellschaft, Hamburg, Germany

Under the heading MULTIVERSUM the Elbphilharmonie will be holding a comprehensive portrait series on the contemporary universal musicians Matthias Pintscher, Peter Eötvös and George Benjamin who work as composers, conductors, curators, teachers and contact partners thereby conveying a multi-dimensional picture of their creativity. Each artist forms the focus of one season at the Elbphilharmonie. The programs designed and largely conducted by the artists themselves open up new musical historical perspectives by presenting a cross-section of their own work and juxtaposing it with works by other composers.
In the 2018/19 season after Matthias Pintscher and Peter Eötvös George Benjamin is now at the center of MULTIVERSUM which is supported by the EvS Music Foundation.
Benjamin conducts four of the six MULTIVERSUM concerts in total, including his works Written on Skin, Palimpsest and Dream of the Song. Also in focus is the performance of a new opera work by George Benjamin, conducted by Kent Nagano at the Hamburg State Opera. The 2018/19 season will feature two special leading international contemporary music ensembles – the Ensemble Modern and the Ensemble Modern Orchestra; the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester as well as Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg are established bodies of musicians in Hamburg.
