Cairo Contemporary Music Days 2018

European-Egyptian Contemporary Music Society (EECMS), Kiel, Germany

Since 2011 the EECMS has organized an annual festival on serious contemporary music in Cairo. Supported by the EvS Music Foundation the aim of the event is to promote awareness about New Music in Egypt and the Middle East and offer Arab composers a platform by means of concerts by first-class European ensembles, master classes, lectures and educational music projects.
2018 will see the hosting of Ensemble Mosaik conducted by Enno Poppe performing works by European composers on the current contemporary music scene as well as those by Arab composers of New Music. Furthermore, workshops performed by Enno Poppe will be offered – on the one hand, for Arab composers and, on the other, for students at the Cairo Conservatory for the elaboration of contemporary works.
The project “Your Voice, My Voice, our Voice” forms another feature in the program of Cairo Contemporary Music Days 2018 and is also to be further developed independently from the festival. Here the human voice – as the most original instrument and means of communication – at the same time forms the focus of the commissioned works and installations. During the composition process a bridge is to be built to the vocal musical practice of other cultures. Artists involved in the project include Brigitta Muntendorf, Hannes Seidl, Uwe Dierksen, Kamilya Jubran, Khaled Kaddal, Sarah Badr and Jaqueline George.
