Karlheinz Stockhausen: Works for Piano and INORI

Berliner Festspiele / Musikfest Berlin, Germany

The finale of Musikfest Berlin is dedicated in 2018 to Karlheinz Stockhausen – and some of his most important works from the 60s and 70s. The works to be performed are:

KLAVIERSTÜCKE I-XI (1955-61)
KONTAKTE for electronic sounds, percussion and piano (1959-60)
ZYKLUS for one percussionist (1959)
REFRAIN for 3 players (1959)
TELEMUSIK (electronic music, 1966)
MANTRA for two pianists and live electronics (1970)
INORI for 2 dance mimes and large orchestra (1973/74)

The scheduled works, whose performance is to be supported by the EvS Music Foundation, depict an exemplary transition from the aesthetics of serial music to the aesthetics that Stockhausen himself described with the term “formula composition”. In three concerts the works from the earlier creative phase as well as MANTRA will be presented by the pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard. The performance of INORI as part of Musikfest Berlin is a guest performance of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. The original version of INORI for large orchestra favored by Stockhausen will be performed for the first time in Berlin. This is also the first time that Musikfest Berlin and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY have worked together as part of their festival activities – a collaboration that is to be continued in 2019 if possible.
