Delian Academy for New Music 2019

Delian Academy for New Music, Ioannina, Greece

The Delian Academy for New Music is an international summer academy for composers under the umbrella of Georges Aperghis and the Grypario Cultural Centre on the island of Mykonos. It is one of the only summer academies in Greece with an international presence. The project starts with an appeal for new works from interested composers worldwide. The jury – consisting of Georges Aperghis, Beat Furrer, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Dimitri Papageorgiou, Alexandros Spyrou as well as the two ensembles-in-residence (this year, Klangforum Wien and the TAK Ensemble from New York) – choose the final pieces within two categories: fellow composers and visiting composers. Additionally, the jury awards the Iannis Xenakis Memorial Scholarship.

In 2019, the focus is on contemporary music for chamber orchestra. A two-day symposium at the beginning of the summer academy offers the opportunity for intense exchanges between the composers Beat Furrer, Samir Odeh-Tamimi and Dimitri Papageorgiou and the chosen students. The compositional thought process of each will be elaborated upon and the given works will be presented in an open and stimulating context. After the detailed considerations during the masterclasses and the development of the works in collaboration with Klangforum Wien and the TAK Ensemble, the results from the summer academy will be performed in four public concerts. The repertoire played will stretch from those of the faculty composers Beat Furrer, Samir Odeh-Tamimi and Georges Aperghis to the new works of the fellow composers. In parallel, there will be workshops with, for example, the musician and dancer Claudia Pérez Iñesta or the ensembles-in-residence Klangforum Wien and the TAK Ensemble. Networking and collaboration initiatives amongst alumni of the summer academy go further than the symposium itself, thus leading to a continual growth of the project. The Delian Academy for New Music thus functions as a point of connection between the local music scene and the international centres of Contemporary Music.
