International New Music Festival AFEKT 2019

AFEKT Festival, Tallinn, Estonia

Now in its 17th year, the international music festival AFEKT has become a leading forum for New Music in Estonia. Its aim is to enrich Estonian musical culture with contemporary works and performances. Managed by Monika Mattiesen, the festival therefore invites international ensembles, musicians, conductors and composers to present the quality and bandwidth that contemporary music has to offer to a local audience. The ambitious program also aims to showcase what is happening internationally on the contemporary music scene with the participation of Estonian musicians and composers. In March 2019 the festival will be featured first in Berlin, Graz and Vienna and in the fall simultaneously in Tallinn and Tartu.

AFEKT focuses this year on large format compositions with a line-up including Landscape for orchestra by Toshio Hosokawa, Stasis collective by Rebecca Saunders, Speicher by Enno Poppe, Ruins of Hara Hoto for orchestra by Märt-Matis Lill as well as works by Olga Neuwirth, Mark Barden, Helena Tulve and Liisa Hirsch. Those featured in Tallinn and Tartu include Ensemblekollektiv Berlin, Nicolas Hodges (piano), Andreas Fischer (bass), the Sonar Quartet, ensemble mosaic, Ensemble Adapter and Sinfonietta Riga. Performing in Vienna, Graz and Berlin will be soloists from Ensemble AFEKT, ensemble mosaic, Schallfeld Ensemble and others besides. The German-Icelandic ensemble Adapter from Berlin will present works by Estonian composers – Helena Tulve, Elo Masing, Tatjana Kozlova-Johannes and Páll Ragnar Pálsson – written especially for the ensemble. The program will be rounded off by performances of works by young Estonian and European composers.
