Sounds from deep down

Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Germany

The composition project sounds from deep down injects modern approaches to the teaching of music into the cultural education work of the Future Lab of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Here, in this unique community inhabited by the world-class orchestra and the local comprehensive school Gesamtschule Bremen-Ost in the socially disadvantaged district of Osterholz-Tenever, young people share their everyday school life with professional musicians. In the projects of the Future Lab, they meet each other at "eye level" while making music. This is all made possible using elaborate methodical and organizational formats, such as the approaches to composition teaching now being applied for the first time at the Future Lab. The project is being carried out with a 6th grade class learning string instruments as part of their music lessons. The instrumental lessons are taught by a team of teachers participating in the conception of the project and carrying out part of the project work within their lessons. The project's artistic direction, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, lies with composer and educator Clemens Thomas.
