Heroines of Sound Festival 2021

Heroines of Sound/ Radialsystem, Berlin, Germany

Since 2014, Heroines of Sound has presented early and current heroines of electronic sound. In 2021, one focus will be on sound art with the pioneers Annea Lockwood and Christina Kubisch. These two outstanding artists exemplify the festival’s genre-spanning profile.

The sound art program will be complemented by the Swedish artist Åsa Stjerna, whose installation Earth Song can be seen for the first time in Berlin. Commissions are being issued to Georgia Koumará/Ensemble Garage, Ying Wang/Black Plage Orchestra, Midori Hirano and Christina Kubisch, who will create a piece of work together with synthesizer trio Lange/Berweck/Lorenz. Conceptually adept and engaged in social critique, the artists develop an expanded art practice that experimentally combines sound production and performance practice. The compositions reflect topical issues concerning our relationship of proximity and distance, they address power, powerlessness and structures on the basis of censorship and repression by means of electronic filter processes and they illuminate the spectrum of electronic sounds in the interplay of individual sound synthesis with an invisible electromagnetic environment.

The Heroines of Sound Festival 2021 is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and brings together concerts, performances, panels, workshops, film programs and a soundbar featuring over 200 titles that encompasses the entire musical spectrum from taped musique concrète to remixes and the sonic arts.
