Yarn/Wire International Institute and Festival

Yarn/Wire, New York City, USA

The Yarn/Wire International Institute and Festival draws audiences from around the world to experience the richness of our local contemporary musical landscape and enables several dozen participant musicians from around the world to collaborate with the members of Yarn/Wire and guest faculty on the development and performance of new work. Participants at the institute work on newly commissioned pieces, collaborate with peers on the creation of works, participate in discussions and lectures with faculty and guests, and new to this year will professionally record their music thanks to a collaboration with Figure 8 Studios (Brooklyn). They will give performances over the course of the institute and interact with a local community of new music practitioners. The general public sees the result of this work through performances, while also having the opportunity to hear world-class performers in concert.

New for the 2022 Institute and Festival: it will take place in NYC for the first time, enabling more and deeper connections to be made.

Since it was founded, Yarn/Wire’s vision for the Institute has been to enable anyone to come regardless of their economic situation. We have been working on ways to ensure that more women and BIPOC composers/creators /performers would find an inclusive and welcoming community at our institute. Contemporary classical music as a field has historically been homogenous, so we hope to model a different way of working both artistically as well as socially through collaborative and inclusive work. The institute reflects this on many levels – artistically through guest faculty and guest performers, and administratively.

We value creativity and drive, and strongly believe that creating classical and contemporary music should be a viable practice for all, especially in the US, if it is to continue to flourish.
