Klavierforum Positano: Beethoven and the Modern Age – Masterclass

Wilhelm Kempff Kulturstiftung, Munich, Germany

In 1957 Wilhelm Kempff organized the first Beethoven course at Casa Orfeo, an academy built according to his own plans in the Southern Italian town of Positano. In the 25 years of its existence under Wilhelm Kempff the Casa attracted a large number of successful pianists of subsequent generations to work intensively on Beethoven’s sonatas and piano concerts. After Kempff’s death classes were led by former course participants, initially Gerhard Oppitz then John O’Conor and finally Bernd Goetzke. For the first time in 2013 and 2015 the classical focus of the Beethoven courses was broadened to include a piano master class program on contemporary music under the artistic direction of Siegfried Mauser. In its reflection on Beethoven’s works the Positano Piano Forum primarily explored works of contemporary music. Furthermore, importance is attached to exploring aesthetic issues. The piano forum will once again be supported by the EvS Music Foundation and will be held as a six-day piano masterclass with two instrumental lecturers just like in 2015. For this it has been possible to enlist the support of recognized specialist in contemporary music, pianist and musicologist Siegfried Mauser, as well as pianist and educationalist Pavel Gililov who is equally renowned as a teacher and soloist.
