Soundstreams Emerging Composer Workshop

Soundstreams Canada, Toronto

The Soundstreams Emerging Composer Workshop is a 3-year initiative that will provide up to 24 young Canadian composers with the opportunity to be mentored by a major international contemporary composer. The works created by the emerging composers will receive multiple performances by a professional ensemble, offering the composers both national and international exposure. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports the 2015 workshop during which Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho and pioneering electronic-music composer Jean-Baptiste Barrière will serve as a mentor to 6-8 post-university Canadian composers over a ten day period which will culminate in a performance of works by the students and the visiting composer. The format of the Workshop will be an interactive dialogue between the composers and mentor. Participants will create a number of new works that will be rehearsed and performed by a professional ensemble under the guidance of the guest mentor.
