OPUS XXI 2017

Hamburg Music and Theater Academy

Cultural and musical innovation needs open spaces that provide scope for experiments, improvisation and encounters with the most varied of aesthetic orientations. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports the summer academy OPUS XXI that was founded in 2001 on the initiative of the Institute for Cultural Innovation Research aimed at offering young performers and composers precisely these open spaces.

OPUS XXI will be held in 2017 in cooperation with Trossingen Music Academy and allows a group totaling 23 graduates from national and international music academies the chance to work with renowned Composer in Residence Miroslav Srnka, the experienced contemporary music ensemble L’Instant Donné and the Conductor in Residence Aurelien Azan Zielinski.

The daily rehearsals and workshops as part of the academy are supplemented by lectures on philosophical, literary and artistic issues as well as questions of copyright and music publishing. There will be a special focus on free improvisation lessons to prepare the students for the high degree of technical and aesthetic flexibility so essential in the field of contemporary music.

The final concert of the academy will be held on August 11, 2017 at the Bregenz Festival.
