Artistic and Educational Collaboration with Cécile Marti as Artist-in-Residence at the SOBS

Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn, Biel, Switzerland

How can we better introduce young people into the world of New Music if not by means of direct contact with the composers and the performing artists themselves?
For this reason, the Biel Solothurn symphony orchestra is supporting the contemporary composer Cécile Marti in the “Artist-in-Residence” project to be sponsored by the EvS Music Foundation in 2016. Collaboration will occur on both an artistic and educational level.
This gives children of different ages the chance to take part in the rehearsals for the work “Seven Towers” that was written by Cécile Marti especially for this project. The young participants experience the orchestra in its work, get to know the musicians and their instruments and have the opportunity to look over the shoulders of the composers at work. Instruction will come care of two experienced mediators from the field of music and theater who will introduce the children to working in workshops. Here they will experience music in manifold ways: through dance, writing music themselves and making music and theater.
The orchestra wishes to explain a contemporary new creation to as many young participants as possible and, at the same time, very generally introduce them to the field of classic music. This educational project is not just limited to collaboration with schools. Young music students at the Bern University of the Arts (Hochschule der Künste) are given the opportunity to play in a symphony orchestra and promote their professional music careers.
