On the Color of Tones – Current Music as a Reflection of Classics and Impressionism

Rundfunk-Orchester und -Chöre GmbH Berlin, Germany

The Rias Chamber Choir was founded in 1948 by Radio in the American Sector (RIAS) in Berlin. From the very start, performing new and the very latest music alongside works of the 18th and 19th centuries formed an important focus for the choir. For the first time, the RIAS Chamber Choir brought the (German) audience into contact with works by Arnold Schönberg, Boris Blacher, Ernst Krenek, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Hans Werner Henze, Dieter Schnebel, Mauricio Kagel, Aribert Reimann, Arvo Pärt, Tan Dun, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Samir Odeh-Tamimi.

In a project spanning three years, the RIAS Chamber Choir would now like – together with the Munich Chamber Orchestra and conductor Alexander Liebreich – to juxtapose a small series of new compositions with works of the classical Modern Age. With their artistic profiles the RIAS Chamber Choir and the Munich Chamber Orchestra headed by chief conductor Alexander Liebreich are both perfect choices to expertly present these poles in musical history.

To this end, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, composition commissions are to be issued to Salvatore Sciarrino, Pascal Dusapin and Georg-Friedrich Haas. All three composers are currently considered among the most renowned artists displaying a great affinity to vocal composition while looking to intense exploration of the music of early eras as an inspiration in their creativity.
