Composition Commission issued to Brigitta Muntendorf: out of the dark

Ensemble Garage, Cologne, Germany

Musical theater, as an appropriate form to answer those questions that Brigitta Muntendorf and Ensemble Garage generally raise in their joint work, in fact seems to almost randomly answer these queries. How can the different forms of expression and projection surfaces be combined? What role is played by musicians and what by the audience? What kind of space is the stage? For out of the dark a close, interdisciplinary collaboration between the composer, stage designers, sound director and other involved parties came about. Forming the basis of the texts are fragments, including those from Don de Lillo’s Point Omega, Jenny Erpenbeck’s Gehen ging gegangen, Wolfgang Hermann’s Abschied ohne Ende as well as other texts by young authors. The interplay of these different musical theatrical forces is to give rise to six “tableaux vivants”. The sprinkling of textual fragments as flash fictions offer documents of the existential longings and needs of a society in the mirror of time. With regard to the technical and spatial transposition of the work Brigitta Muntendorf and the stage designer and painter Vincent Mesnaritsch look to great flexibility. The tableaux are constructed in such a way that they are not tied to the performance location, thereby making it easier to hold repeat performances.
