Composition Commission issued to Catherine Milliken

Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schwerin, Germany

Cathy Milliken was commissioned to write a piece for ensemble and loudspeakers that is to be premiered at the official opening of the 2016 Festival in Wismar. The EvS Music Foundation is funding the composition commission.
Wismar is a harbor town on the Baltic. Water, natural sounds in the city, its echo in the intact Old Town characterize the acoustic environment of the City of Wismar. Cathy Milliken begun her tonal research here, she spoke to citizens, recorded sounds at the harbor and at peripheral locations. The sound material collected in this way became the point of departure of an instrumental composition for ensemble and tape. Likewise, the time and location of the premiere are therefore key content aspects of the composition commission. Wismar’s mighty gothic brick church of St. George is one of the largest religious buildings in Northern Germany. The work by Cathy Milliken will be performed here as a spatial composition.
