Composition Commission issued to Gerhard E. Winkler

Ensemble die Reihe, Vienna

Viennese ensemble ‘die Reihe’ was founded in 1958 by Friedrich Cerha and Kurt Schwertsik and counts as one of the most traditional ensembles for New Music in Europe. For 2015 the ensemble commissioned the Austrian composer Gerhard E. Winkler with an organ concert. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supported the commission. The premiere was accompanied by non-sacred works by Pier Damiano Peretti, Gzregorz Pieniek, Amir Safari and Ernst Wally who use the organ as a solo instrument to a large extent.
