Composition Commission issued to Hans Thomalla

Theater Freiburg and Augsburg, Germany

2010 recipient of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s Composer’s Prize composer Hans Thomalla is writing a piece of musical theater for Theater Freiburg and Theater Augsburg that deals with the Kaspar Hauser story. In 1828 Kaspar Hauser became an attraction: without origin or language he served as a perfect projection surface for people’s desire for sensation. Thomalla distills a text collage from reports of the day and musicalizes the intangible phenomenon for the stage encountering the existential void of an identity and its consequences for language, Hauser’s expressivity.
