Composition Commission issued to Lin Wang: Das versunkene Schiff des Zauberers

Deutsches Nationaltheater and Staatskapelle Weimar, Germany

The novel Das versunkene Schiff des Zauberers (The Magician’s Sunken Ship)
by the Chinese writer Ban Ma is being translated into German especially for this opera project. The text tells of the discovery of an ancient ship on the Yangtze that despite its vast age has not aged or weathered. The woman discovering the ship, who lived with her aunt in the reeds, and an antiquities researcher sent by the government together discover that the ship was a message from a prince from the past. By deciphering his secret the discovery dissolves.
While modern China is primarily oriented to progress and the future, awareness of our own history in Germany plays a great and positive role – especially in Weimar. Scarcely no-one could highlight this contradictory view of the material any better than Lin Wang, whose composition commission is being supported by the EvS Music Foundation. Wang was born in China where she began her studies which she was later to continue in Europe, amongst other places in Germany. Her interest lies in bringing material and people together from different cultures and in departing from the production of the musical material per se.
