Composition Commission issued to Moritz Eggert for the Opera “M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder” (“M – A City in Search of a Murderer”)

In Fritz Lang’s film "M" about the child murderer Hans Becker an entire city is so disturbed that not only the police but also criminal gangs set about looking for Becker (to reinstate their reputation damaged by the child murderer). The film not only portrays one of the greatest stories in criminal history but also presents an extremely perceptive social portrait. The EvS Music Foundation will be supporting the Komische Oper’s composition commission to Moritz Eggert to set the plot to music for a piece of musical theater. It is in particular Eggert’s willingness to experiment musically and his versatility, also including popular styles of music, that make him both perfectly suited to a premiere at the Komische Oper Berlin and to this subject matter that oscillates between a highly intelligent social study and good entertainment. The premiere of the musical theater will be held under the direction of the artistic director Barrie Kosky in May 2019.
