Composition Commission issued to Wolfgang Mitterer

City of Karlsruhe / Cultural Affairs Office, Germany

The organ is considered the queen of instruments. There will be an opportunity to see and also hear eight such queens from five countries on September 19, 2015 via satellite stream at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. For this special project Austria’s Wolfgang Mitterer was commissioned with a composition that is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
Realized in collaboration with Karlsruhe’s European twin towns the project bears the title “ORGANUM” and was selected by a top-notch jury in an ideas competition to mark the city’s anniversary. Organists from Karlsruhe’s twin towns Temesvar, Halle (Saale), Nottingham and Nancy will premiere the new simultaneous work by Wolfgang Mitterer together with four organists in Karlsruhe. What they then each play will be transmitted by satellite to the University of Arts and Design and will be “assembled” there into a media organ octet in a technically and artistically challenging sound and image installation.
The international flair of the event underlines the connecting, border-crossing and peace-generating power of music, which illustrates the European ideal of a community of shared culture and values.
