Composition Commissions issued to Birke Bertelsmeier, Gordon Kampe, Philipp Maintz, Sarah Nemtsov and Moritz Eggert

Birke Bertelsmeier, Gordon Kampe, Philipp Maintz and Sarah Nemtsov have one thing in common: born between 1976 and 1981 they experienced the turning point in German history as children while their politico-historic awareness formed in the period of reunification. They completed their studies at music academies in the East and the West and live at various locations east and west. Unified Germany is for them the norm.

And it is precisely this norm that the festival Europäische Wochen Passau wishes to celebrate in 2015 – to mark the 25th anniversary of German reunification. For this the four young German composers received composition commissions with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. All four musicians are among the up-and-coming composers of their time who have already received numerous awards and who write for top-notch ensembles, orchestras and soloists. They will create works for a series of piano recitals by young and promising pianists.

And because the Trabant as an icon of East German identity is to be honored with a suitable place at this festival the Residenzplatz, the heart of Passau’s city center, will be host to a concert of car horns for at least 12 “Trabbis”. This will come care of Munich composer Moritz Eggert who, likewise with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, will be extending an older, two-movement car horn concert for this “Trabbi Concert” with a third movement. This is aimed as a reminder of Fall 1989 when a cavalcade of beeping Trabbis rolled over the border from Austria into the Federal Republic of Germany to be met by a huge array of international media: these were the first GDR citizens allowed by the SED regime to travel to the west from Hungary.
