Is it possible to combine contemporary music and industrial architecture in a way that makes sense? How do sounds impact the perception of spaces and how does the perception of music change in the interplay with architecture?

These questions are at the focus of “Musik im Industrieraum” (Music in the Industrial Space), a cooperation project at Collegium Novum Zürich with Studio Klangraum Basel. Five industrial sites in Switzerland will be explored here from a tonal perspective: the Oederlin site near Baden (AG), industrial spaces in Rorschach (SG), the Bernoulli Silo in the Port of Basel, blueFACTORY on the site of the former brewery Cardinal-Brauerei Fribourg, and Swisspearl Eternit in Niederurnen.

For each of these locations composition commissions will be issued – with the support of the EvS Music Foundation – amongst others to Carola Bauckholt, Manos Tsangaris and Daniel Ott. In intense exploration of each of these architectural sites the composers translate their perceptions and impressions into music. For instance, the musical works will be both an expression of their own experiences and feelings and a personal interpretation of the specific location.

Furthermore, pieces will be presented that can hold their own under these spatial specificities not corresponding to the lab conditions of a concert hall. Transposing a piece of music of this kind attuned to the space is a demanding task for the musicians. They also need to be in a position to react subtly to the venue.

Studio Klangraum wishes to provoke a new kind of listening by bringing together contemporary music with specific architectural locations – listening that is oriented as much to spatiality as it is to musicality.
