Composition Commissions issued to Mesias Maiguashca, Carola Bauckholt, Martin Schüttler and Mark Barden

Tonal art offers a huge range of possibilities, especially in the form of concert installation. Here the bodies of musicians interact with the space and create living ensemble sculptures. To realize this concept of TonalSpokenArt (“KlangRedeKunst”) Ensemble Aventure Freiburg will be issuing, with the support of the EvS Music Foundation, four commissions to composers who have explored this idea in a variety of ways.

For instance, the composer Mark Barden will be working on a new version of his concert installation “Alam” (“Pain”, after a poem by the Palestinian Zakaria Mohammed) for ensemble and electronics.

In his new work Martin Schüttler particularly focuses on the theatrical corporeality of movements, gestures and sound and language particles within the space. The theme is the experience of fragmentation that is staged as constant halting, interruption and restarting on as many compositional levels as possible.

In turn, Carola Bauckholt was asked to produce a “mobile” concert installation that exits from the entrance area of the performance venue, is carried out from there, enters into many relationships and branches off into the exhibition spaces until it reaches right down into the vaulted cellar. The vanishing point of this spatially branching installation is ultimately intended to form a standing interaction of five wind players and accordion with a tonal object by the composer Mesias Maiguashca.

Together the four ensemble sculptures promote, in reciprocal reflection and penetration, a new reception method and create an interactive piece of TonalSpokenArt that changes the spaces, sounds and people and makes new experiences of perception possible.
