Sarah Nemtsov

Composition Commissions issued to Sarah Nemtsov, Steffen Krebber and Steingrimur Rohloff

Ensemble LUX:NM – IM FOKUS Concert Series, Berlin, Germany

The saxophone – an underestimated instrument? Sadly it is still the case that this wind instrument does not enjoy the same acceptance as other orchestra instruments. Furthermore, because it is burdened by many prejudices it is often not used in compositions.
This is to change. Initiated in 2013 for contemporary music with saxophone and continued in two concerts by the LUX:NM ensemble in 2015, the IM FOKUS concert series has set itself the task of reinforcing the position of classical saxophone in contemporary music. To extend the repertoire for saxophone three young composers were issued with composition commissions supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
Sarah Nemtsov (born 1980) already began composing at the tender age of eight. Today, her works are performed at events such as internationally acclaimed festivals. Aged 39 Steffen Krebber studied composition at Stuttgart and Cologne’s Academies of Music. He lives and works in Cologne. German-Icelandic composer Steingrimur Rohloff was born in 1971 and is one of today’s most famous young composers from Scandinavia. So far his works have been performed in more than 25 countries.
With their compositions the three exceptional talents are to help make the professional field of the classical saxophone more attractive. In so doing they follow on from the work of musicians who contributed to the development of new saxophone literature through their work.
