PIERRE BOULEZ’ 90th Birthday

LUCERNE FESTIVAL, Switzerland

The LUCERNE FESTIVAL will be celebrating Pierre Boulez’ 90th birthday. In 2004, together with Director Michael Haefliger, Boulez founded the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, a unique talent hotbed for orchestral musicians, composers and directors specifically for music of the 20th and 21st centuries.
As part of the festival, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, eleven concerts by academy students and members of the ensemble intercontemporain will be held as “Boulez Homages”. Featured here will be many of Boulez’ own works for a variety of line-ups from all his periods of creativity. At the same time, six new compositions will be introduced, commissioned by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL for the composers Heinz Holliger, György Kurtág, Tod Machover, Christian Mason, Matthias Pintscher and Wolfgang Rihm. Also to be premiered here are the two commissioned works by Samy Moussa and Piotr Peszat issued by Roche Young Commissions.
On Sunday, August 23 the festival extended an invitation to Lucerne’s Culture and Congress Center Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern. Some of the «Boulez Homages 1-7» will be premiered on repeated occasions on the day itself – on the roof terrace, at the city’s art museum Kunstmuseum Luzern, in the Terrassensaal, the Luzerner Saal and the Konzertsaal.
