Seven Composition Commissions: AUTONOME MUSIK – 20th Anniversary of ensemble mosaik

ensemble mosaik, Berlin, Germany

To mark its 20-year anniversary ensemble mosaik is planning a four-part concert series entitled AUTONOME MUSIK in the 2017/2018 season to be performed at the Kesselhaus of Kulturbrauerei Berlin. The programs will focalize contrasting conceptions of concert music in a juxtaposition of composition and performance. As part of this, seven commissions will be issued to composers and concept artists with the support of the EvS Musc Foundation. Composition commissions will go to Sebastian Claren, François Sarhan, Ulrich Kreppein and Carlos Sandoval while the performances will come care of Kaj Duncan David, Rama Gottfried, François Sarhan and Guido Henneböhl.

In each case four compositions, whose detailed tonal and formal design will take on a distinct oeuvre-like feel, will be performed alternately alongside a continuing series of performance miniatures. The formal structure will be reflected spatially on two stages: the ensemble compositions will feature on the main stage. For the performances a set-up will be developed that corresponds to the more intimate situation using proximity to the audience and specific lighting. This concept enables ensemble mosaic to continue its exploration of new and content-focused concert formats.

With these composition commissions it aims to stimulate and formulate further development of the tonal language, research into instrumental or electronic extensions and development of new conceptions and formats for contemporary music.
